See the approach work through a decision
Fictional inputs illustrate the research process, from starting assumptions to a decision.
Starting assumptions. Fictional Cedar Consumer reports $120 million of annual operating cash flow and $40 million of capital spending. Its assumed equity market value is $1 billion.
A simplified operating-cash-flow-minus-capital-spending estimate is $80 million, giving an 8% yield on that assumed market value. Now ask what happens if working capital absorbs more cash or maintenance spending rises. That single yield cannot establish intrinsic value or a durable moat.
What to check next. Leave the valuation unresolved until the debt obligations, cash-flow assumptions and competitive evidence are checked. The numeric screen on this page is a BrokerBridge research template, not a published Buffett formula.
Research criteria
- 1.ROE > 15% consistently over 10 years with low debt-to-equity
- 2.Durable pricing power, high switching costs, or brand moat
- 3.Free cash flow yield exceeds 10-year treasury yield + equity risk premium
- 4.Management team with proven capital allocation discipline
Review criteria
- 1.Structural moat erosion or competitive obsolescence
- 2.Valuation exceeds conservative intrinsic value by > 50%
- 3.Superior capital allocation alternative identified
Research this in BrokerBridge
- Provide Chat with the filing excerpts and their reporting periods. Ask it to separate reported figures from estimates, then say: "Do not place, approve, or change any order."
- Check the cash-flow calculation yourself. Compare conservative and optimistic assumptions and look for evidence that would undermine the moat thesis.
- Keep the result as research. This lens grants no permission to trade; a later trading instruction or saved strategy has its own destination and approval rules.
An explicit buy, sell or close-now request in Chat can authorize action without another approval click. Live permission can remain valid for later requests in the same chat and destination. Use the research wording above and read the Chat permissions lesson before requesting a trade.
Method and source references
The sources explain the concepts used here. Template criteria and fictional examples do not establish an edge or reproduce a named investor’s complete process.
- Berkshire Hathaway: Owner's Manual, intrinsic value
Explains intrinsic value in terms of future cash discounted to the present, and why changing assumptions changes the estimate. It does not prescribe the numeric filters on this page.
- SEC: Beginners' Guide to Financial Statements
Explains how financial statements differ, including cash flow and the balance sheet. Use the source statements rather than treating accounting profit as available cash.
Research, not order execution
Use this lens to study a company or market. It does not place orders or grant a strategy trading authority.
Long-term holding focus. Does not employ short-term stop losses.
Known Failure Modes & Limitations
- Technological disruption eroding moat faster than DCF models capture
- Value trap dynamics where low multiples reflect permanent impairment
